How to Clean a Wahl Peanut: The 5-Minute Deep Clean

Why Cleaning Matters
Most people think their Peanut is dying when it starts pulling hair or making a loud “clacking” noise. 9 times out of 10, the motor is fine — it’s just fighting against a wall of compressed hair and dead skin inside the blade assembly.
Cleaning your Peanut every few uses (at home) or every day (in the shop) will double the life of your blades.
Step 1: Surface Brush (Every Use)
After every haircut, use the small cleaning brush that came with your Peanut to brush away loose hair from the blade teeth and the sides of the trimmer.
Pro Tip: If you lost your brush, a clean, dry toothbrush works just as well.
Step 2: Blade Removal
On most Wahl Peanut models, the blade is a “snap-on” style.
- Hold the trimmer body firmly.
- Place your thumb on the blade teeth.
- Push the blade away from the body until it pops off.
Warning: Be careful not to drop the blade on a hard floor. The teeth are made of precision-ground steel and can chip easily.
Step 3: The Internal Clean (The ‘Secret’ Step)
Once the blade is off, you’ll see a small cavity inside the trimmer body where the drive cam sits. This is where hair “packs down” and creates the most friction.
- Brush out all the hair from the drive cam and the internal housing.
- Use a can of compressed air if you have one to blow out the microscopic dust.
- Wipe the internal plastic with a dry cloth.
Step 4: Disinfect (Barbers Only)
If you are a professional, now is the time to spray the separate blade with a disinfectant like Andis Cool Care or Wahl Clini-Clip. Let it sit for the time specified on the can (usually 2-10 minutes) before wiping dry.
Step 5: Oiling and Reassembly
A clean blade is a dry blade, and a dry blade creates heat.
- Snap the blade back onto the trimmer body.
- Turn the trimmer ON.
- Apply 3 drops of oil across the top of the teeth.
- Apply 1 drop on each side of the blade rail.
- Let it run for 20 seconds.
- Wipe off any excess oil with a clean paper towel.
